Hello and welcome to The English We Speak, I'm Helen.

Neil:

Hello everyone. I'm Neil. It's great to be here today, Helen.

Helen:

You are very cheerful today.

Neil:

I feel pretty good, I walked from the train station to the office and it seems to have really energised me.

Phone rings...

Helen:

That's my phone. Hello, hello? Anyone there? Hello?

Neil:

Oh, it looks like you may be out of juice.

Helen:

What? I am not drinking any juice, but my phone has just gone dead.

Neil:

That's what I mean. Your phone isn't working because it's out of juice.

Helen:

Please explain: what's juice got to do with my phone?

Neil:

When you've used all the battery power of something like a mobile phone, so that it doesn't work anymore, we can say it's "out of juice". It's a slang expression. Have a listen to these examples:

My laptop's out of juice. This is so frustrating.

У меня разрядился ноутбук. Это так досадно.

I am packing three spare phone batteries so I don't run out of juice on my climbing trip.

Я беру с собой три запасных батареи для телефона, чтобы не остаться без электроэнергии во время восхождения.

Helen:

I see. Can we use it for anything else apart from batteries?

Neil:

Sure, sometimes if a person feels low on energy, they could say "I'm out of juice". Also if your car is low on petrol, you could say "The car's running out of juice."

Конечно, если у тебя совсем нет сил, то ты можешь сказать:

"I'm out of juice – Из меня выжаты все соки".

А если в твоей машине мало бензина, то можно сказать:

"The car's running out of juice – В машине кончается горючее/бензин".

Helen:

Thanks for explaining this phrase. Now I'm feeling quite thirsty – a glass of juice would be most welcome.

Neil:

Let's go and get some then. Meanwhile, charge your phone, so it's got plenty of juice..

Нил:

Похоже, у тебя кончился сок (out of juice).

Хелен:

Что? У меня нет никакого сока, но в моем телефоне только что села батарейка.

Нил:

Об этом я и говорю. Твой телефон не работает, потому что у него разрядился аккумулятор (it's out of juice – буквально: из него выжат весь сок).

Хелен:

Скажи, пожалуйста: какое отношение сок имеет к моему телефону?

Нил:

Когда у тебя полностью садится аккумулятор в чем-то – например, в мобильном телефоне, так что он больше не работает, то можно сказать, что из него "выжат весь сок" (out of juice). Это разговорное выражение. Давайте послушаем примеры:

Explanation:

A young woman who is not very intelligent but is particularly attractive.

Example:

is certainly not a bimbo because she's very brainy and works as a scientist. 

🙂Blow hot and cold - семь пятниц на неделе 

Explanation:

to continually change one's mind about something/someone;

to be indecisive; 

to waver.

Example:

He blows hot and cold on the plan, so that I don't know wether he will eventually help us or not. 

🙂Carry the can - отдуваться 

Explanation:

to take responsibility or blame for something. 

Example:

She suspected that she'd be left to carry the can for her boss's mistakes. 

🙂Chew the fat - точить лясы, чесать языки, трепаться, болтать 

Explanation:

to have a friendly, informal talk, to chat in a relaxed way.

Example:

My friend and I sat up half the night just chewing the fat. 

🙂Cut to the quick - задеть за живое

Explanation:

to hurt someone's feelings very deeply, 

to be extremely unkind or nasty.

Example:

I was cut to the quick by her harsh remarks. 

🙂Finger in every pie - каждой бочке затычка

Explanation:

to have a part in something; 

to be involved in numerous activities, often in a meddlesome way. 

Example:

He likes to have a finger in every pie in the class

🙂Eat humble pie - загладить/искупить свою вину

Explanation:

to be very submissive after regretting an action or words. 

🙂Drop a clanger - сморозить, ляпнуть, допустить бестактность 

Explanation:

to be guilty of an embarrassingly bad mistake, or discreet remark or action.

Example:

I dropped a clanger at the party when I mentioned Tom's wife - I didn't realized she left him.
